To add a detail to the Perigueux race above, de Montariol was not actually killed in the fatal crash; the sole victim was the Marquis de Montaignac.  The Marquis financed the firm of Landry et Beyroux.

De Montaignac basically overtook de Montariol, turned to wave his thanks, lost control, and knocked de Montariol off the road.  De Montaignac had carried on regardless, but on hearing the noise behind, looked back, and lost control again...
