This 1979 race-by-race carset for F1 Challenge '99-'02 is largely converted from the rFactor GP79 mod, with a few exceptions in which I and On Mario/Paul carried over cars from the CREW/TNT 1978 mod. Luigi70 made an impressive new set of Ligiers for us, as well. Paul created the stellar new graphics for the wheels, the excellent cockpits, and all the CREW-style artwork found in the vehicle files. I have also included Paul's CREW-style graphics for 1979 (contained in the options.mas file) in the Options folder.

We very nearly finished this race-by-race mod some time ago, but hit a wall after our group's exhausting effort to do 1976-78 and never got '79 properly tested. So this collection of cars predates my turning into an increasingly crazed perfectionist (stopping just short of obsessive-compulsive disorder) as I worked through the first half of the 1980s; I'm sure it's probably not accurate down to the last decal, engine cover, and transparent windscreen like my more recent efforts. And whereas GP4 cars are very easy to convert and incorporate into F1C, rFactor cars are much more troublesome, especially with regard to shadows. The shadow-objects for .va files are all right, but some front-wing and many tire shadows were terribly buggy, so you will find them "turned off" (with "//") in the .gen files. Until I sorted out the problems with shadow-objects I was getting random CTDs when leaving races and replays; I feel confident that that issue is solved.

I've included my default.cfg file for '79 in the Save folder; in testing '79 I discovered that moving in a different default.cfg from 1980 screwed up the cockpit eyepoints. The Seasondata/Circuits folder includes a single file for Zandvoort that's important to avoiding naming conflicts with the cars, along with an edit of Watkins Glen by Paul and myself that primarily removes a chicane not used in '79.

Thanks to Wookey for hosting this carset, and for the invaluable collection of F1 pictures he's organized at http://wookey.bbfr.net/ Thanks also to JalNervion for the special effects (now 11.1) that have kept F1C alive more than any carset or track. Be sure to use his terrain.ini file in the Circuits folder, and to have the circuits' .scn files call the Vehicles folder, which should include his latest cmaps.mas (92 MB) file.

Really Really good job! Looking forward for 1981 Wink

Thanks, Luigi, but now both drivers have Nelson Piquet's helmet...

Question: Why Marc Surer has in his icon the German flag?

Hi, guys.

This is for the edition-oriented people.
If you just want to download the ready files, please ignore this message. If you feel like getting some hands-on, this message might be for you. Wink

If I remember correctly, F1C has a conflict problem.
Even when we change the names of objects (.mts), objects are composed of surfaces and equal surfaces having the same name in different objects might cause a confusion to the .exe file, which might call the same surface twice for two different objects.

This means even though the .mts files for Lauda's and Piquet's helmets are different, they might have the same surface name for the .bmp files which "paint" both helmets and, thus, the .exe file might be calling the same surface to show both helmets in game.
This is also why sometimes, when you check two cars of the same team on the road, they carry the same number. The solution for this is normally changing the name of that surface in one of the helmets/chassis, etc.

I hope I have helped with this "F1C mystery" a little.
Best wishes, everyone.

Grazie, Luigi. I'll try your newest files after the work...

Edit: It works, Luigi! Many thanx!

Hi, Lee67.

I've seen this behaviour before.
It works fine on the race, though, doesn't it?
Can you post a Trace file right after trying to get the D3 to appear in the showroom?
This is normally related to a missing .mts or .bmp or even a problem in the .gen file for the cars. In both cases, I take it the Trace file analysis is the best place to start.

Best wishes.

Lol! You can't, unless it's Wonder Woman's invisible jet. tongue

However, if I remember correctly, this problem happened only on the showroom.
The car would show properly on track.
If it doesn't, you won't even get to track and have an error message instead.
Best regards.

The METAL2.BMP file was missing in the team.mas at ATS D3. So I copied this file from ATS D2 and now is the ATS D3 car visible in the showroom. Very Happy
